What If Hollywood’s Greatest Longevity Secret Was Hiding in Plain Sight?
Everyone wants to know the secret to living longer. Every week there’s a new headline announcing the latest breakthrough—eat this, don’t eat that, take this supplement, try that exercise, plunge into freezing water, meditate more, sleep eight hours, cut out sugar, embrace fasting. Scientists spend billions researching aging while Silicon Valley entrepreneurs pour fortunes into technologies they hope will extend human life. It’s one of mankind’s oldest obsessions: finding a way to outrun the clock.
But what if the answer wasn’t buried inside a laboratory? What if it wasn’t locked away in ancient wisdom or hidden somewhere in the Himalayas? What if one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors had been telling us his secret all along—and everyone laughed because it sounded too ridiculous to be true?

If you remember the legendary actor Ernest Borgnine, you probably remember his unmistakable smile and infectious personality. He wasn’t the stereotypical Hollywood leading man, yet he seemed to possess an energy that never faded. As he continued working well into his nineties, interviewers constantly asked how he stayed so youthful.
Borgnine’s answer became legendary. He often joked that the key to his vitality was regular self-love. Whether he was completely serious or simply enjoying the reactions of reporters hardly mattered. The story took on a life of its own because it touched on something society has always found strangely uncomfortable.
L.A. TIMES (2012) Hollywood Great Ernest Borgnine dies at 95; won Oscar for ‘Marty,’
That contradiction fascinated me. Human beings are perfectly willing to discuss billion-dollar anti-aging therapies, miracle diets, experimental drugs, and futuristic technology, yet we’re often embarrassed to talk about one of the most ordinary aspects of being human. We seem to prefer complicated explanations over simple ones. Perhaps it’s because complicated answers feel more important. Or maybe they’re easier to sell.
That’s where the idea for ERNIE BORG 9 was born.
I started imagining a completely different version of Ernest Borgnine—not as a Hollywood actor, but as an ageless cyborg who had somehow survived generations while everyone around him grew old and disappeared. Scientists couldn’t explain him. Philosophers debated him. Journalists demanded interviews. Governments investigated him. Military researchers searched for hidden technology. Religious leaders questioned whether his existence violated natural law. Everyone wanted the secret.
Meanwhile, Ernie simply smiled.
Every morning, he disappeared behind a locked door for exactly five minutes before emerging with the same calm expression he’d always worn. The scientists searched his house for hidden batteries. They dismantled his clothing looking for advanced circuitry. They searched for alien technology, nuclear fusion cells, miracle chemicals, and microscopic machines. They examined everything except the obvious. The answer was sitting right in front of them, hidden inside a perfectly ordinary daily habit that no respectable gentleman was willing to discuss.
That’s the joke at the heart of the song.
Everyone listening knows exactly what Ernie is doing.
Nobody in the song wants to say it out loud.
I’ve always loved songs that tell stories with a wink instead of a lecture. The best humor often sneaks past our defenses and lets us laugh at ourselves. ERNIE BORG 9 isn’t really about robots any more than Animal Farm is really about farm animals. It’s about our obsession with finding extraordinary answers while overlooking ordinary truths. It’s about how we often turn simple human behavior into mysterious legends simply because we’re uncomfortable talking honestly about it.

Musically, the song follows the same playful spirit. Mixing Britpop melodies, rockabilly swagger, jangling guitars, and tongue-in-cheek storytelling, ERNIE BORG 9 unfolds like a miniature science-fiction movie. Every verse drops another clue while refusing to explain the mystery fully. By the time the final chorus arrives, listeners have already figured it out for themselves—and that’s far more satisfying than having the joke explained.
The song also serves as a reminder that growing older doesn’t have to mean losing your sense of humor. Ernest Borgnine remained funny, curious, and full of life until the very end, and perhaps that’s the real lesson hidden beneath all the mythology. Maybe laughter, joy, and refusing to take ourselves too seriously are just as important as whatever health advice happens to be trending this week.

ERNIE BORG 9 appears on my album BACK ON THE RUN, a collection of songs that blends storytelling, humor, nostalgia, and a little social commentary into modern roots rock. Like many of the songs on the album, it begins with an unusual idea, follows it wherever it leads, and hopefully leaves listeners smiling while giving them something to think about long after the music ends.
If you’ve ever wondered whether the greatest mysteries are sometimes hiding in plain sight—or if you simply enjoy songs that don’t sound like everything else on the radio—I invite you to give ERNIE BORG 9 a listen.
Sometimes the truth really is stranger than fiction.
And sometimes…
All a machine needs is a little daily maintenance.
Some men search for immortality in science. Others seek it in religion. Ernie Borg 9 found it somewhere much stranger. Set to a jangling mix of Britpop charm, rockabilly swagger, and darkly comic storytelling, Ernie Borg 9 follows the tale of an ageless cyborg who has somehow outlived his friends, his enemies, and perhaps entire civilizations. Scientists are baffled. Philosophers are confused. Journalists demand answers.
Ernie merely smiles.
Packed with witty lyrics, melodic guitars, driving bass lines, and a chorus that feels equal parts celebration and conspiracy, the song drops clue after clue without ever quite revealing the secret. The answer is hiding in plain sight, buried beneath double meanings, raised eyebrows, and one very peculiar daily routine.
Part science fiction, part comedy, and part meditation on mortality, Ernie Borg 9 is a playful reminder that the greatest mysteries of life are sometimes far less complicated than we’d like to believe.
After all, some machines require maintenance.
And Ernie never misses an appointment.
Inspired by the real-life Classic Hollywood Actor ERNEST BORGNINE, who confessed to his lifelong obsession and how he believed it kept him so young and vibrant.
LYRICS
Well, they buried all his classmates
Back in ’89
Yet Ernie Borg Nine still strolls the avenue
Looking perfectly fine
The papers begged for answers
The doctors scratched their heads
He only smiled politely
And this is what he said…
“I avoid the grand philosophies
The gurus and their schemes
I simply spend a little time
Attending to my dreams”
The mayor called it nonsense
The bishop called it sin
But every dawn the curtains closed
And no one entered in
Oh, Ernie Borg Nine
What keeps your motor warm?
While all of us are rusting
You survive each storm
Oh, Ernie Borg Nine
Your secret stays alive
A five-minute ceremony
Keeps the old machine revived
The scientists took samples
The military took notes
They searched beneath his floorboards
And cut apart his coats
No battery was discovered
No miracle design
Just a locked door every morning
And a grin that said “I’m fine”
Oh, Ernie Borg Nine
The centuries roll by
While lovers come and lovers go
And empires fade and die
Oh, Ernie Borg Nine
You never seem concerned
For every candle life blows out
Another somehow burns
The neighbors hear no chanting
No hymns and no applause
Just the squeak of ancient floorboards
And a pause…
A thoughtful pause…
The newspapers keep guessing
Fusion cells and alien dust
But Ernie only winks and says
“Maintenance is a must”
Now children ask their grandfathers
“Why doesn’t Ernie age?”
And grandpa coughs and changes subjects
Before he turns the page
The answer sits before them
Hidden plain as day
Inside a daily habit
No gentleman would say
Oh, Ernie Borg Nine
The everlasting man
With nothing in his toolkit
But a very special plan
Oh, Ernie Borg Nine
Still dancing after dark
Keeping all his circuits bright
With one familiar spark
The world may seek forever
For the secret of his prime
But every morning Ernie smiles…
And somehow…
Finds the time
