Yesterday, US President Joe Biden gave a speech on Democracy in Tempe, Arizona. Clearly, he again put Democracy on the ballot for 2024. But which kind of Democracy?

I mean is it the kind where a popular vote of the people is usurped by something called the Electoral College that was created in the late 1700s when men rode horses to work and communication was done by letters that would take weeks if not months to arrive?

I mean, it seems really counterintuitive to modern democracy that a US President can be chosen by a minority of the voters. Why? I mean, that’s how we got Donald Trump as US President. The majority of the American people did NOT vote for him yet he was legally elected US President by this “Electoral College” thing.

And why can’t we have a direct democracy via Smartphone? Are WE THE PEOPLE capable of actually making good decisions?  Or we are completely incapable of engaging in democracy?

Or are we talking about the Greek type of Democracy whereby only a few of the citizens were deemed the “voting public”?

The Greeks actually did NOT trust the average citizen to vote. They were NOT informed and lacked the intellect to make “greater good” decisions.
Should we stick with that model?

And what about all the huge money corruption of our politicians caused by decades of decay without reform?

This morning, 90-year-old US Senator Diane Feinstein passed away. She was in the Senate longer than most Americans have been alive! This is NOT a duty to the country. This is a career!  Public service should be a duty and not a career choice.  How about reform? Term limits come to mind!

How about having a US President for just (1) a six-year term, no re-election? That means no more campaigning once elected. That means they can actually do their job without begging billionaires for dough 24/7.

How about getting rid of all dark money in politics? Or limiting campaigning to just 6 months before elections; no more 24/7 perpetual campaigning so the public can get a rest and politicians can focus on their jobs.

How about age limits? 90-year-old Feinstein was completely ineffective. How about making 70 the age limit for all offices? Let’s make room for the younger adults who have a future to participate in.

Dianne Goldman Berman Feinstein was an American politician who was in her sixth term as United States senator from California, since winning a special election in 1992. During her entire Senate tenure, she has been the state’s senior senator.

Look, we are so busy watching the ridiculous Trump Circus unfold and reacting to his death threats for Military Generals and Judges that we are unable to have meaningful serious conversations on reform that would actually rebuild the trust that has been eroded over the last decades. Instead, all we can engage in is debating your age versus a lunatic Orange Blob who misdirects us into his world of chaos and nonsense! It sucks and does a disservice to every American.

So which Democracy are we speaking of?

Clearly, US President Joe Biden and the Democrats want us to vote on Democracy. OK, I am on that bus! Let’s have that vote!

Yesterday in Tempe Arizona, Biden said…

“I have made the defense, the protection, and the preservation of American Democracy the central cause of my presidency.”

“From Gettysburg to my Inaugural Address, to the anniversary of the January 6th insurrection, to Independence Hall in Philadelphia, and Union Station in Washington, I’ve spoken about the danger of election denialism and political violence and the battle for the soul of America.

“Now today in Phoenix, Arizona, at an institute devoted to the defense of democracy named in honor of a true patriot, I’m here to speak about another threat to our democracy that we too often ignore: the threat to our institutions, to our Constitution itself, and the very character of our nation.”

“As I’ve always been clear, democracy is not a partisan issue. It’s an American issue.

“I have come to honor the McCain Institute and Library because they are home to a proud Republican who put country first. Our commitment should be no less because democracy should unite all Americans – regardless of political affiliation.

“But there is something dangerous happening in America. There is an extremist movement that does not share the basic beliefs of our democracy. The MAGA Movement.

“Not every Republican – not even the majority of Republicans – adheres to the extremist MAGA ideology. I know because I’ve been able to work with Republicans my whole career. But there is no question that today’s Republican Party is driven and intimidated by MAGA extremists. Their extreme agenda, if carried out, would fundamentally alter the institutions of American Democracy as we know it.”

“As I’ve said before, we’re at an inflection point in our history – one of those moments that only happens once every few generations. Where the decisions we make today will determine the course of this country – and the world – for decades to come.

“So, you, me, and every American who is committed to preserving our democracy carry a special responsibility. We have to stand up for America’s values embodied in our Declaration of Independence because we know MAGA extremists have already proven they won’t. We have to stand up for our Constitution and the institutions of democracy because MAGA extremists have made clear they won’t. History is watching. The world is watching. Most important, our children and grandchildren are watching.

OK, Mister President, I am with you on Democracy. But which version? And where’s the reform to get us there?
