The Real Story Behind Way Too Cool

A true 1979 coming-of-age story of a 16-year-old’s desert journey to Las Vegas, chasing music, identity, and dreams that felt just out of reach

By Johnny Punish

Way Too Cool isn’t just a song—it’s a true story pulled straight from my life.

Set between Southern California and Las Vegas in 1979, this track captures a defining moment: youth, risk, music, and the realization that sometimes the world you’re chasing is just out of reach.

If you’ve ever felt like someone—or something—was just beyond your grasp… this story will hit home.

🚗 A 16-Year-Old, a 1961 Impala, and the Open Desert

At 16 years old, I drove my grandmother’s 1961 Chevy Impala—mustard yellow, classic American steel—from Walnut, California to Las Vegas.

Alone.

No phone. No GPS. Just instinct and determination.

Then it happened.

Just before Baker, in the Mojave Desert, the thermostat blew. The engine overheated, and I was stranded in extreme desert heat—over 110°F.

Back then, this wasn’t just inconvenient—it was dangerous.

With nothing but water supplies and sheer will, I hitched a ride into Baker, a tiny outpost in the desert. A local helped me fix the car, and somehow, I made it back on the road.

That moment? It sticks with you forever.

🎶 The Soundtrack: The Pretenders & The Birth of a Music Identity

Blasting through the desert on cassette:

The Pretenders.

That sound—cool, distant, effortless—defined something I didn’t yet understand but immediately connected with.

It wasn’t just music.

It was attitude. Identity. Direction.

That influence would later shape the emotional tone behind Way Too Cool.

🎰 Las Vegas, Valley High School, and the Teenage Dream

I arrived in Las Vegas, where my mom had already relocated, working as a blackjack dealer.

I enrolled in Valley High School, finishing 11th and 12th grade there.

This was the beginning of everything:

  • Rock music obsession
  • Concert energy
  • Late nights and neon lights
  • Big dreams in a bigger city

And yes… chasing girls.

💔 “She Was Way Too Cool For Me”

The Vegas scene was electric.

Cocktail waitresses. Club girls. Women who carried themselves with confidence, style, and experience far beyond a high school kid.

And me?

I went for it anyway.

Every time.

And every time, the result was the same:

They were way too cool for me.

But here’s the truth—that pursuit, that rejection, that drive—that’s where the story lives.

🎤 The Rock Era: Influence of a Generation

This period marked my full immersion into rock culture.

Artists like Pat Benatar and the broader late-70s rock movement shaped my musical direction.

What stood out most:

  • Confidence masking vulnerability
  • Style as identity
  • Emotion wrapped in attitude

Those themes live at the core of Way Too Cool.

🎓 From Rock to Punk: The College Shift

After graduating from Valley High School, I moved back to California and attended Cal State Fullerton.

That’s where everything evolved.

I discovered punk rock—and with it came:

  • Social awareness
  • Political consciousness
  • A broader understanding of the world

This wasn’t just a musical shift.

It was a personal transformation.

⚡ The Turning Point: From Teen Dreams to Global Perspective

The final transformation shown in the Way Too Cool music video reflects a real-life shift:

From:

  • Teenage rocker chasing moments

To:

  • Punk-influenced thinker engaging with global issues

Over time, that evolved into:

  • A career in global social activism
  • Media appearances discussing international affairs
  • A focus on Middle East issues for over two decades

🌍 40+ Years Later: Still Creating, Still Evolving

That early journey never stopped shaping me.

Today:

  • Over 400 songs written
  • Member of ASCAP
  • Creator behind Punish Studios
  • Continued work as a musician, storyteller, and commentator

The same drive that pushed a 16-year-old into the desert… still fuels everything I do.

💬 Why This Story Resonates

Way Too Cool connects because it’s universal:

  • Chasing something bigger than yourself
  • Reaching beyond your current reality
  • Learning through failure, not success

And most importantly:

Becoming who you are because of those moments—not in spite of them

🧠 Final Thought

We’ve all been there.

Standing just outside the world we want.

Trying anyway.

And sometimes…

That’s exactly what it takes to grow into it.

Way Too Cool isn’t just a song. It’s a moment in time that never really leaves you.
