Every artist has chapters.  You can hear them if you listen closely. Some musicians spend their entire careers trying to write the same hit over and over again. I never wanted that. Every record I’ve made reflects who I was at that moment in my life. Different places. Different struggles. Different questions. Different sounds. Looking back over more than thirty years of writing music, I can clearly hear three distinct eras of Johnny Punish.

If you’re new to my music, these are the three songs I’d recommend to understand the journey.

Era One (1995–2001): Punk Rock Punish

Featured Song: “Stone Throwing Riot”

This was the beginning; my Twisted Nixon years.  Mosh Pits, Great Friends, Loud guitars. Fast tempos. No apologies.

I wasn’t interested in fitting into the music business. I wanted songs that challenged authority, questioned convention, and captured the restless energy of youth. These recordings were fueled by equal parts frustration and optimism—the belief that music could still shake people awake.

“Stone Throwing Riot” captures that spirit better than any other song from those years. It’s raw, rebellious, and unapologetically punk. Playing it live was the best.  I would jump into the crowd during the bridge, the band would just play the bridge endlessly while mosh pitted with our fans.  It was always incredible….a few bumps, bruises and shanks but it was always all good.  The fans would always protect me and launch me back on stage when I was ready to finish off the song with a vicious take down of the Israeli Zionists and their psychopathic regime.

Those were fun days, unforgettable!

So if you ever wondered where Johnny Punish started, well it was during this era.

Era Two (2001–2020): Post-9/11 Punish

Featured Song: “9/11 Truth Rock”

Then the world changed.  Like millions of people, September 11 forced me to ask difficult questions—not just about that day, but about politics, media, war, and the stories we’re told.

My songwriting became more cinematic and more confrontational. The music still rocked, but the lyrics dug deeper. These weren’t songs written to make everyone comfortable. They were written to encourage people to think for themselves.

Whether listeners agree with every lyric isn’t the point.

The point is to ask questions.

“9/11 Truth Rock” became the defining song of this era because it represents that fearless search for truth.

Era Three (2021–Present): Neo-Punish

Featured Song: “From Mexico With Love”

Moving to Mexico changed me.  Living outside the United States gave me distance.  And with distance came perspective.  My songwriting expanded beyond politics into something broader. Love. Freedom. Travel. Memory. Humanity. The search for peace. The beauty and heartbreak of ordinary life.

The music became more diverse as well, blending rock, jazz, Latin influences, electronic textures, world music, cinematic arrangements, and storytelling.

I call this chapter Neo-Punish because it isn’t a rejection of the past, it’s an evolution of everything that came before.

“From Mexico With Love” represents this new voice. It’s reflective rather than reactive. Personal rather than political. A song written by someone who has seen enough of the world to understand that people have more in common than they often realize.

The Journey Continues

These three songs span more than three decades of songwriting.   Three different versions of the same artist.  Three different perspectives.  One ongoing journey.

If you’ve only heard one Johnny Punish song, I invite you to discover the others. You might find that your favorite version isn’t the newest one—or the oldest one—but the one that speaks to where you are today.

Because that’s what music is supposed to do.

It grows with us.
