Young People On Fire: The Spirit of Rock & Roll Never Gets Old

Why the spirit of youth, rebellion, and rock & roll never fades away.

Every generation thinks it invented rebellion. The leather-jacket kids of the 1950s, the hippies of the 1960s, the punk rockers of the 1970s, the MTV dreamers of the 1980s, and the Britpop generation of the 1990s all believed they were discovering freedom for the first time. The fashions changed, the technology evolved, and the music took on new forms, but the feeling remained exactly the same. It was the belief that life was just beginning and that the world was waiting to be conquered.

There’s something magical about youth that has nothing to do with age. It’s the excitement of a Saturday night with nowhere specific to go. It’s hearing your favorite song blasting from a passing car. It’s staying out too late with friends, chasing dreams that don’t quite make sense yet, and feeling like anything is possible. When you’re young, every road leads somewhere exciting, every night feels important, and every opportunity feels within reach.

The world often tries to convince young people to slow down. Be realistic. Be practical. Make safer choices. Yet history has always belonged to the dreamers, the rebels, and the people willing to take chances. Every artist, entrepreneur, musician, and adventurer started with a spark that refused to be extinguished. They ignored the voices telling them to settle down and instead followed the call of possibility.

Rock and roll has always been the soundtrack to that spirit. From the first rockabilly records spinning on jukeboxes to the massive guitar anthems that filled stadiums decades later, great music reminds us that life isn’t meant to be lived cautiously. It’s meant to be experienced. It’s meant to be felt. The best songs capture those moments when the future seems wide open and the night feels like it might last forever.

That idea inspired my song, **”Young People On Fire.”** I wanted to write a high-energy anthem that celebrates youth, freedom, friendship, and the reckless optimism that makes life exciting. The song draws inspiration from classic rockabilly, roots rock, and Britpop, blending twanging guitars, driving rhythms, and singalong choruses into something that feels both nostalgic and timeless. The imagery of poodle skirts, leather jackets, neon lights, jukeboxes, and open roads isn’t just about the past—it’s about a feeling that exists in every generation.

At its heart, “Young People On Fire” is a reminder that being young isn’t about the number of candles on your birthday cake. We’ve all met young people who have already given up on their dreams, and we’ve all met older people whose eyes still light up when they talk about the future. The real difference is attitude. The fire lives inside the people who keep creating, exploring, taking risks, and believing there’s still another great adventure waiting around the corner.

Perhaps that’s why songs about youth never disappear. They aren’t really about looking backward. They’re about reconnecting with the part of ourselves that refuses to quit. They’re about remembering that life is still happening right now, and that every day offers another chance to chase something meaningful.

So wherever you find yourself today, don’t let the world convince you that your best days are behind you. Turn up the music. Call your friends. Take the long way home. Keep chasing what sets your soul on fire. Because rock and roll was never about age. It was always about spirit.

And that spirit is exactly what “Young People On Fire” is all about.

Listen to the song below and let me know if it brings back a few memories of your own.

LYRICS

Hey! Come on! Yeah!

Streetlights glow on a Saturday night
We got our dreams and we’re holding on tight
Everybody says we’re wasting our time
But we’re still running with our hearts on the line

Radio’s loud from a passing car
Everybody wants to be a rock n roll star
We’re still chasing what we can’t explain
Laughing in the dark while we’re dancing in the rain

Young People On Fire
Burning with desire
Nobody’s gonna tell us where to go
We’re running wild and we’re stealing the show
Young People On Fire
Higher and higher
Living like tonight will never end
Yeah we’re young and we’re doing it again

Girls in poodle skirts spinning around
Boys in leather jackets shaking this town
Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring
So we’re living for the moment and the songs we sing

Jukebox playing underneath the neon glow
We got nowhere special but we’re ready to go
The whole world’s trying to slow us down
But we’re still raising hell on the edge of town

Young People On Fire
Burning with desire
Nobody’s gonna tell us where to go
We’re running wild and we’re stealing the show
Young People On Fire
Higher and higher
Living like tonight will never end
Yeah we’re young and we’re doing it again

We don’t need permission
We don’t need a plan
We’re standing together
Yeah we’re making our stand

Every dream every scar every road we’ve known
Every night we’ve spent feeling all alone
Turns to gold when the music starts to play
And we’re never gonna fade away

Young People On Fire
Burning with desire
Nobody’s gonna tell us where to go
We’re running wild and we’re stealing the show
Young People On Fire
Higher and higher
Living like tonight will never end
Yeah we’re young and we’re doing it again

Young people on fire
Young people on fire
Rock n roll forever
Young people on fire
