Better In The Dark: Why Some of Us Never Quite Fit In

The Story Behind Johnny Punish's Noir-Inspired Anthem for Outsiders and Late-Night Thinkers

Most songs about loneliness treat it as a problem to be solved. The lonely person eventually finds love, joins the crowd, or discovers some grand sense of belonging. But real life isn’t always that neat. Sometimes you spend years trying to fit into a world that never quite feels like your own.

Sometimes you attend the parties, celebrate the holidays, and follow the traditions because that’s what everyone else seems to be doing. Yet somewhere deep down, you still feel like an observer standing just outside the room.

That feeling became the inspiration behind “Better In The Dark,” one of the most personal tracks from my new album, BACK ON THE RUN. The song follows a narrator who looks at the world around him with a mixture of confusion, humor, and resignation. He watches people place enormous importance on birthdays, holidays, and social rituals, but he struggles to understand why these events seem to matter so much. It’s not bitterness. It’s not anger. It’s simply the perspective of someone who has always felt slightly disconnected from the things everyone else appears to celebrate.

As I wrote the song, I found myself thinking about how much pressure society places on conformity. We’re encouraged to follow the same path, care about the same milestones, and react to life’s events in the same way. If you don’t share the enthusiasm, people often assume something must be wrong. But what if nothing is wrong? What if some people are simply wired differently? What if they find meaning in solitude, reflection, creativity, or observation rather than constant participation?

The chorus of “Better In The Dark” isn’t really about darkness at all. It’s about honesty. When the lights go out, the performance ends. The expectations fade away. The pressure to impress, compete, and conform disappears for a while. In that darkness, you’re left with something far more valuable: the truth. For many people, the quiet moments alone are when life makes the most sense. It’s when they can finally hear their own thoughts without the noise of the crowd drowning everything out.

Musically, the song draws heavily from the jangling guitar-driven alternative rock and Britpop influences that shaped so much of my musical taste. There is a touch of dark humor woven throughout the lyrics, along with a noir-like atmosphere that gives the song a late-night feeling. I wanted it to sound like a conversation taking place after midnight, when the world has gone quiet and people are more willing to admit what they’re really thinking.

One of my favorite moments arrives near the end of the song with the reference to the sands of time. No matter how much energy we spend trying to fit in, time keeps moving forward. The years pass whether we are accepted or rejected, celebrated or ignored. Eventually, every person faces the same question: did I spend my life becoming who I truly am, or did I spend it trying to become who everyone else wanted me to be?

That question runs through much of BACK ON THE RUN. The album is filled with restless characters, dreamers, drifters, and outsiders searching for their place in a world that often feels strange and disconnected. Some are running toward something. Others are running away. But all of them are trying to make sense of their journey.

If you’ve ever felt uncomfortable in the spotlight, if you’ve ever questioned traditions that everyone else seemed to embrace without hesitation, or if you’ve ever found yourself staring out a window at two in the morning, wondering why you see the world differently, then “Better In The Dark” may resonate with you. It isn’t a song about giving up. It’s a song about accepting who you are and recognizing that there is nothing wrong with seeing life from a different angle.

In a culture obsessed with visibility, attention, and constant performance, perhaps there is something rebellious about embracing the shadows. Perhaps there is something liberating about admitting that you don’t have all the answers, that you don’t need the approval of the crowd, and that sometimes life really does make more sense when the lights go out.

“Better In The Dark” is available now on BACK ON THE RUN. Turn down the lights, press play, and see where the song takes you.

“Better In The Dark” is one of the most intimate and haunting moments on the album, BACK ON THE RUN. Wrapped in jangling guitars, late-night melancholy, and a darkly humorous worldview, the song follows a narrator who feels disconnected from the celebrations and expectations that seem to matter to everyone else.

Part confessional and part observation, Better In The Dark explores loneliness, self-awareness, and the strange comfort of living on the outside looking in. With its Morrissey-inspired wit, noir atmosphere, and sing-along refrain, the song embraces the idea that sometimes the truth is easier to see when the lights go out.

From forgotten birthdays to the relentless sands of time, Better In The Dark is a bittersweet anthem for outsiders, insomniacs, and anyone who has ever felt more at home in the shadows than in the spotlight.

LYRICS

Da Da Da Dark

My first thought was he lied with every word
A psycho-killer with malicious eyes
He hates the whole wide world
Standing in the doorway
I’m in no-man’s land
You know there is only a few things
I really don’t understand

Like holidays and birthdays
I don’t believe in Christmas
New Year’s is just another day
On my birthday no one gives a
Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa

Everything is better in the dark
Everything is better in the dark
So bury your head in the
Sa Sa Sa Sand
Da Da Da Da
Da Da Da Da
Da Da Da Da

Thanks for the invite
I really had no plans
Strummin’ here with my future
Just a one-man band
And I really don’t care what they say about me
I’m a nowhere man
You know there is only a few things
I really don’t understand

Like holidays and birthdays
I don’t believe in Christmas
New Year’s is just another day
On my birthday no one gives a
Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa

Everything is better in the dark
Everything is better in the dark
So bury your head in the
Da Da Da Dark

Sands of time
They got your life on the line
But you don’t care
Cause you’re unaware
You’re just a wannabe Brian Jay Cline
You’re buried before your time

Like holidays and birthdays
I don’t believe in Christmas
New Year’s is just another day
On my birthday no one gives a
Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa

Everything is better in the dark
Better in the dark
In the dark
So bury your head in the
Da Da Da Da
Da Da Da Da
Da Da Da Da
